Cast Iron Skillet Apple Crisp

This skillet apple crisp baked in a cast iron skillet is easy, delicious and the perfect holiday dessert to serve for Thanksgiving or Christmas!

Ingredients

Apple Crisp Filling

  • 6 granny smith apples
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar (lightly packed)
  • ¼ cup granulated white sugar
  • 2 tablespoon unsalted butter if butter is salted, omit extra salt
  • 2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice (or equal parts, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Apple Crisp Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • ½ cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (room temp or melted) if butter is salted, omit extra salt

Instructions

Apple Crisp Filling

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees (set rack in center).
  • Peel, core and slice apples.
  • In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, brown sugar, white sugar, pumpkin pie spice, salt, lemon juice and melted butter. Mix well.
  • Pour apple mixture into cast iron skillet.

Apple Crisp Topping

  • In large bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, pecan and salt. Mix well.
  • Add melted butter. Hand mix until crumbs form.
  • Evenly sprinkle apple crisp crumble topping over apples in skillet.
  • Bake cast iron skillet apple crisp in oven for approximately 40 to 50 minutes.
  • Serve warm topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce (optional).

Notes

  1. Leftovers and Storage: Transfer to airtight container or dish. Refrigerate for up to 48 hours. Can reheat and serve.
  2. Nut Substitutions or Omission: If you are allergic to pecans, you can omit. You can also substitute other nuts such as walnuts, almonds or hazelnuts.
