What is bang bang sauce made of?
Bang bang sauce is so tasty and super easy to make. It combines 3 key ingredients: mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce and Sriracha.
Sriracha sauce is the spicy component to this sauce and many people ask how spicy is Sriracha? Suffice it to say, it has some heat! So, if you are sensitive to spice when you make this recipe, you can start by combining the mayonnaise and thai sweet chili sauce and then add Sriracha up to the point that you feel comfortable with the heat level. You can also add a dash of salt and pepper depending on your tastes.
This recipe has the “standard” spice level for the bang bang shrimp sauce that was made famous by the Bonefish Grill appetizer “Bang Bang Shrimp” – my Grandma’s favorite! So cute! However, if you like it less spicy, the sauce will still be fabulous if you add less Sriracha.
If you are looking to lighten up the recipe, you can substitute low fat mayo. You can also try a combination of greek yogurt and mayonnaise to lower the fat and saturated fat. Some variations of this recipe also include a dash of garlic powder, a few drops of hot sauce or a squeeze of lemon juice. If you are looking for a keto variation, instead of thai sweet chili sauce, you can use garlic chili sauce (the unsweetened version) and add any keto friendly sweetener of choice.
The versatility of this sauce is amazing. It is great on shrimp, chicken, vegetables and sushi rolls. You are going to love it! You can even use this in my Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice recipe!
What is bang bang shrimp?
As mentioned, bang bang shrimp is a best known appetizer at Bonefish Grill which is absolutely fabulous. The bang bang shrimp recipe is succulent shrimp, lightly coated in a delicious batter and deep fried to crunchy perfection and then doused in creamy, sweet and spicy bang bang sauce. If you have never tried this appetizer at Bonefish Grill – trust me, order it stat!
What is the best sweet chili sauce?
Sweet chili sauce is a key ingredient to making this delicious bang bang sauce recipe. This Mae Ploy Sweet Chili Sauce is one of my favorite brands and can often be found in most Asian grocery markets. Thai Kitchen is also a great brand and is pretty mainstream so it may be available in your standard grocery store.
