Best rum for this margarita
Picking the best rum for your margarita can be tricky because there are so many rum options. I love this margarita with Bacardi Silver Rum or Captain Morgan Spiced Rum if you are looking for a bit more spice.
Can you make margaritas with rum?
Absolutely! It is a common misconception that margaritas can only be made with tequila. A margarita is excellent with many different alcohol varieties. The important parts of a classic margarita are a delicious lime and orange flavor that are introduced through lime juice and triple sec.
What Triple Sec and Lime Juice do you recommend?
Rose’s Lime Juice is my go-to favorite for margaritas. It is also excellent in many other cocktails that need a lime flavor. As far as triple sec, Hiram Walker and DeKuyper Triple Sec are both good brands that are easily found in the liquor section of most grocery stores.
Can this recipe be modified to make a Coconut Rum Margarita or Pineapple Rum Margarita?
Yes! To make a coconut rum margarita: Use 1 oz Malibu Coconut Rum and 2 oz Regular Rum. Malibu Rum is sweeter so you may wish to decrease amount of triple sec and include some fresh squeeze orange juice. To make a pineapple rum margarita: Add an additional 1 oz of pineapple juice.
Ingredients for this recipe
- Rum of choice: light rum (silver rum) or dark rum (gold rum)
- Triple Sec
- Rose’s Lime Juice
- Fresh squeezed lime juice
How to make this recipe
If you like a salt rim on your margarita, I recommend that you pre-salt your glass. You can swirl your margarita glass in triple sec. Triple sec is a sweet syrup that will help the salt stick to the rim of the glass. Then dip your glass into course or kosher salt.
Next, shake all ingredients over ice in a cocktail shake. Pour and enjoy!
FAQ and expert Tips
You can mix them but I generally recommend picking one liquor to use for this margarita.
You can use some orange juice instead of triple sec. Triple sec adds a sweet component so if your margarita is not sweet enough with orange juice, you can add about 1-2 teaspoon of powdered sugar and test for sweetness.
Rose’s lime juice is a sweet and lime component. I recommend using some simple syrup and additional lime juice as a substitute.
