Ingredients
- Eggs and/or Egg Whites
- Milk: Heavy cream, half and half, whole milk, 2% milk, fat free milk. Non-Dairy Milk Options: Almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, pea milk or oat milk.
- Sugar (Optional): You can use white sugar or brown sugar. This sugar free maple syrup is a great sugar free option! My favorite maple syrup for pancakes and French toast when I am looking for a low calorie option.
- Vanilla Extract
- Ground Cinnamon
- Salt
- Sourdough Bread: You can use any sourdough bread that you enjoy. If you don’t have sourdough bread on hand, you can also use Brioche Bread, White Bread, Whole Wheat Bread or any bread of choice. If using stale sourdough bread, I recommend soaking longer in the milk and egg mixture.
- Oil or Butter (to cook the French toast in the pan)

- Maple syrup or Sugar free syrup
- Butter
- Fresh berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries or strawberries)
- Regular or Sugar Free Whipped Cream
- Vanilla or Chocolate Protein Cream
How to make sourdough French toast
- Whisk together eggs, milk, salt, sugar (optional), vanilla extract, salt and cinnamon in baking dish or bowl.
- Coat each sourdough bread slice with egg/milk mixture (top and bottom). Make sure each slice of sourdough bread is well coated with egg mixture.
- On medium/high heat, add oil or butter to skillet, frying pan or griddle. Place sourdough bread slices in single layer in pan and cook until golden brown on each side (approximately 2-3 minutes).
Can you make French toast with sourdough bread?
Yes! You can use sourdough bread to make French toast. Sourdough bread has a lovely crusty and airy texture which is great for making French toast.
Healthy sourdough French toast
If you wish to make healthy sourdough French toast, you can omit the sugar and use egg whites instead of whole eggs.
Simply omit the whole eggs and use 4-6 egg whites total (approx. ½ cup of egg whites).
Overnight French toast with sourdough bread
There can be a variation depending on the type or brand of sourdough bread that you use. Use half of the mixture if soaking overnight.
Depending on sourdough bread used, test moisture level prior to cooking and dip again if additional moisture is needed.
You want your sourdough bread to be moist and fully coated, but not soggy such that the sourdough bread will fall apart.
Sourdough for French toast
You can use any brand of sourdough bread or sourdough sandwich bread for French toast.
The trick depending on the type of sourdough you use is to make sure your sourdough bread is fully coated and has soaked up some of the mixture, but not so much that the bread is too soggy.
